On the Job Employers Most jobs in fashion writing are available in the large fashion cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, London, and Paris. Newspapers such as the New York Times have extremely small fashion desks, 50 with only a handful of full-time staff.

In winter, the company may want women models outdoors snowboarding, skiing, and snowshoeing. The photographer must accommodate these locations and understand how to get a good shot of the model in action while still making sure the customer will be able to see the details of the clothing. This requires technical skill and also an artistic flair to convey the lifestyle of the customer. These photographers are always working under deadlines, and they usually take thousands of photos, of which they may only use a few.

According to Harper’s Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey, quoted in the book In Fashion, “To be a fashion editor [at a magazine, the equivalent of a stylist] you have to have a vision, and you have to be strong enough to fight for your vision. . I believe in individual talent. . ” Other skills include organizational skills, grace under pressure, a thick skin, diplomacy, and the ability to get along well with others. Bailey contends that “you have to be able to collaborate with many other strong personalities who are around you to bring your vision to life.
