Example text

Support each other and acknowledge each other. Jo Anything the person writes should not be changed. Should not be tamed. It should be rough around the edges, that is, the writing portrays the true feelings; the feelings are raw… Don’t lead people. It’s quicker if you let them do their own exploring. There’s no quick fix. It’s slow and gradual… You cannot dictate when people want to talk. Indie Larma Beccy talked at length about how workers had talked to her in a patronising way and that certain phrases were used frequently; for example: ‘There’s nothing you can tell me that I haven’t heard before, so I won’t be shocked’ or ‘I know how you feel’.

Others continue to write. The type of writing also changed for some writers: some wrote poetry and then went on to stories; others kept diaries and then went on to poetry. Gemma and Beccy both wish to write a book. Gemma wanted to write a book about what had happened to her, and a local journalist was interested in helping her to get it published, but: I became scared and backed out. ’ I’m so young. I also wanted it to be private. Beccy has started to write her book: I have written part of my ‘life story’.

Where possible, we have tried to give examples of an author’s spontaneity and of their subsequent recollection ‘in tranquillity’. Is there a risk in this process that the spontaneous expression of feelings will become an end in itself, a form of perpetual self-pity, a self-indulgent wallowing? Yes, there is. If these poems – and, indeed, other writings – are to have therapeutic validity, they should be regarded as steps towards a happier future, or at least towards a higher level of self-realisation.
