Because Rogers could not be located for purposes of a divorce, Franklin and Deborah Read contracted a common-law marriage: that is, by living together, the marriage came to be recognized by custom and common consent.

In his capacity as postmaster general, Franklin had been consulted about the location of this current by the Board of Customs in Boston and by the Lords of the Treasury in London. And with his typical thoroughness, Franklin by 1769 was prepared to provide both offices with maps and charts, with red lines clearly delineating the Gulf Stream—to the great benefit of all future Atlantic navigation.
