The annotation and the synopsis The genre of the annotation is most often defined as a brief explanation of a document or its contents, usually added to the original text as a note to clarify its title (ANSI, 1997). This hardly differentiates it from an indicative abstract the nature of which will be discussed in Chapter 3. The clearest and most useful distinction, however, is to say that annotations reflect the content of books while abstracts – as defined earlier – reflect the most important content of journal articles (Koltay, 2003).

59 Abstracts and Abstracting Abstracting there is regarded as a scientific activity, most probably because of the critical character of the abstracts. Once more on objectivity In summarising what we have said about critical abstracts, we want to remind abstractors to beware of a natural tendency to confuse their own interests and lines of thought with those of the author of the original (Collison, 1971). When we select articles to be abstracted, as well as when we indicate what type of treatment they deserve, evaluation is taking place.

When defining an abstract, we mentioned that the originals are articles published in scholarly or professional journals. A number of ‘Instructions to Authors’ provided by such journals limit the length of a scientific article to between 2,000 and 4,000 words. Abstracts represent the content of these and this length of the originals has a very strong influence on the length of the abstracts. We often find that the desirable length of abstracts is expressed in percentages. Borko and Bernier (1995), for example, suggest that an abstract’s length should be between 10 and 20 per cent of the original.
